Removable dentures are removable false teeth made from either acrylic or metal that replace missing teeth.

How Are Dentures Fitted To Your Mouth?

  • They are made by taking an impression from your mouth and are custom made by a dental technician for the best fit.
  • The colour and the shape can be adjusted to look as close to natural teeth as possible.
  • Depending on how many teeth are missing, you may need Complete or Partial dentures.
Your dentist will give you options depending on your circumstances.

Types Of Dentures Fitted

Full Dentures

Complete dentures, which also known as Full dentures, are prosthetic teeth that will be fitted if all your upper and/or lower teeth need to be removed. They fit snugly over your gums and jawbone.

Partial Dentures

If you have some of your own natural teeth, you may only need a Partial denture to fill in the gaps left by missing teeth. Partial dentures are made from a metal or plastic plate with a number of false teeth attached. These are either fastened to your natural teeth with a metal clasp so they can be unclipped and removed.

Dentures can help you to eat and speak comfortably and help to improve confidence and self-esteem.

  • Full dentures can help to support your face, plumping out your cheeks and lips.
  • Partial dentures help to ensure that your remaining teeth do not become crooked or tilted as they can move to take the space of the missing tooth.

Dentures can be fitted as soon as teeth are removed. However it is advisable that the initial denture is one made from acrylic one as this can then be relined to accommodate shrinkage of the gums which will happen in the months following extractions as the tooth sockets heal. It will then possible to remake the denture in chrome once the gums have settled.

For the first few days after being fitted with dentures, your dentist may advisee to wear them constantly. Once your mouth gets used to wearing them, you should remove dentures before you go to bed. This will allow your gums to rest and prevent any fungal infections from developing.

Well-cared-for dentures should last several years but they may need to be relined or re-made after normal wear or after any changes in the shape of your mouth as your gums or bone shrink.
